Annemieke Mulders

While repeatedly destroying and repairing this ceramic, I mend my soul a bit at a time, seeking acceptance for its fragility.

Artist Statement

Essence is of being vulnerable, accepting trauma and its scars, growing towards a future, and opening up for new possibilities. Cast in porcelain, followed by repeated steps of destruction and building up using glaze and epoxy, this work contemplates the essence of SICK AF.

Rejected I am lost, unable to focus. I am sorrowful for the cracks in the world and my soul. I wish to repair and mend, restoring beauty to my world.

I patiently piece together and built my ceramics, finding ingenuity and beauty in the flaws. Fractures guide the narration of this piece, allowing a new aesthetic to emerge from imperfection. While repeatedly destroying and repairing this ceramic, I mend my soul a bit at a time, seeking acceptance for its fragility.

The resulting vessel explores the liminal space between malfunction, beauty, acceptance, and growth. It is an antidote to the easily discarded items left behind by those seeking power or perfection. This vessel evolves and changes in front of you and strives to be simultaneously fragile, robust, complex and straightforward.
